Zero-padding is used to increase the displayed frequency resolution of a curve. This is done in time domain by adding zeros to the end of the impulse response before computing the FFT. The adding of zeros does no harm since the impulse response should have died out at the end. But the adding of zeros increases the FFT size and thus increases the displayed frequency resolution.
