When printing a plot, why is the plot squeezed to the left corner?

A typical plot is shown below.

The plot is squeezed to the left because the legend is displayed. The legend may be turned off from Plot->Layout->Legend or using the  toggle on the Standard Toolbar. The legend may also be moved inside the plot as shown in the section below.
